What's cool, is that Butcher takes the most common fantasy cliche of a "farmboy with destiny" and twists it by making our Tavi the least powerful person of his world (initially, anyway). Someone you'd actually want to have as your friend. When so many books have antiheroes or darker heroes it's nice to have an essentially good hero. Butcher doesn't just copy the Roman world, he's trying to show how it might change if people suddenly find themselves in a strange world and start getting awesome powers. They still have slavery (of course, the hero is about to change that) and Roman-like legions but also a bit of a medieval structure with the most powerful individuals as overlords. Yes, it's more of a lighter read, not as rich in detail or multileveled as Jordan's or Martin's books but at least Butcher can advance the main plot in every book without getting sidetracked with tertiary characters and storylines.īasically it's Romans with special powers in another with other species they fight with. ![]() It's got its fans (mostly fans of Dresden books, I gather) but it is rarely mentioned on fantasy boards and definitely not hyped about (which might actually be a good thing). ![]() Codex Alera is one of the most underrated fantasy series out there. ![]()
